Pastel Goth Room Decor Ideas for a Cute Creepy Home

If your dream room lives somewhere between a candy shop and a graveyard, you're in the right place. Pastel goth mixes soft, sugary colors like bubblegum pink, mint and lavender with darker, weirder subject matter: skulls, skeletons, a bit of decay and a lot of dark humor. I paint this stuff for a living, so my own rooms are basically test labs for it. Here's how I'd decorate a pastel goth room, starting with the free option and working up to the pieces that make people stop in the doorway.

1. Pick your palette before you buy anything

Pastel goth falls apart when every color gets equal airtime. What works for me: one main pastel for the big surfaces (walls, bedding, curtains), one or two candy accents, and one dark color to keep it from turning into a nursery. Black works, a deep plum works, a very dark green works if you're brave.

Roughly: most of the room soft, a good chunk bright, a small amount dark. The dark part is what makes it goth. Without it you just have a very nice pink room.

2. Try the look for free on your phone

3. Hang one statement piece of pastel goth wall art

Every pastel goth room needs one piece that makes people stop mid-sentence. For a lot of people that's "Until the Lights Go Out": a flamingo skeleton at its own birthday party, with cake and balloons. It's pink, it's glittery and it's about death, which is the whole point of the aesthetic. Nothing is only cute and nothing is only creepy.

Hang it where your eyes land first when you walk in, usually above the bed or the desk. One strong piece does more than ten small trinkets.

4. Pastel goth bedroom ideas

The bedroom is where this style is easiest, because soft things are allowed to be very soft there.

• Bedding in your main pastel, with one dark pillow or throw so it doesn't look like a hotel for unicorns.
• Warm fairy lights instead of the ceiling light. Pastels look sickly under cold white light and lovely under warm light.
• Small dark accents on the nightstand: a skull candle, a black ceramic dish, a moody houseplant.
• One piece of art with a feeling in it. "Not Today, The Feelings Are Huge" is a black cat on an orange sofa surrounded by donuts, wine and tissues. It's the most honest portrait of a bad Sunday I've ever painted, and it belongs in a bedroom.

5. Build a small gallery wall

Once you know which designs you keep coming back to, group a few. "Plastic Memories" is a good one to build around: a rubber duck sitting on a melting ice cube with a goldfish frozen inside. Soft and nostalgic on the surface, a little bittersweet underneath, which is basically the pastel goth mission statement.

6. Make a kawaii goth corner

If you like the cute side even more than the creepy side, give it its own corner: a reading chair, a shelf of plush toys and one piece with big eyes and a dark twist. "Ricochet" is a zombie-cute unicorn that gets hit by an arrow and still reaches for the stars, surrounded by gossiping geese and a friendly octopus. 7. Pastel goth Halloween decor that stays up all year

The trick with pastel goth in October: skip the plastic. A foam tombstone goes back in the box on November 1st. A painting of a skull cupcake doesn't have to.

"Strawberry Graveyard" is strawberries and cream with little skulls hidden between them, and "The Last Dessert" is a skull-shaped cupcake with a smoking gummy bear standing guard. Both look like Halloween if you want them to, and like a very sweet kitchen the rest of the year.

Three things I'd avoid

• Too much black. Once black is the main color, you have regular goth with pink accessories. Lovely, but a different room.
• Too many props. Five skull figurines look like a Halloween shop. One good skull looks like a choice.
• Everything matching. The best pastel goth rooms look collected over time. Let one piece be the weird one.
