What It's Like to Buy an Original Candy Decay Painting

Claudia Schmidt

Every Candy Decay original starts the same way: a 15 × 15 cm wooden panel, acrylic paint, acrylic and alcohol markers, a protective spray varnish, and finally a layer of crystal-clear resin for that signature glossy finish. Then it's hand-signed and sealed with my embossing stamp, and it exists exactly once.

I usually offer new originals to my newsletter subscribers first, before they open up to everyone else. Once one sells, it's gone, there's no reprint, no second edition. That's the part people ask me about most, so here's a peek at three that have already found homes, and what buying one actually looks like.

Cheesy Romance

Two pigeons sharing a candlelight dinner in Central Park, dressed-up romance with the least dignified bird in the world as the lead. This one sold to a collector who told me it reminded them of their own first date. That's usually how it goes: people don't just buy the painting, they buy the moment it reminds them of.

The Creation of Temporary Things

The Creation of Temporary Things original artwork, a surreal mixed media painting about creation, beauty and impermanence

One of the more quietly emotional pieces I've painted, about creation, beauty, time and impermanence, the same themes that run through most of my work. Originals like this one are where the Candy Decay world actually starts. Everything else in my shop, from wall art to digital downloads, exists because a painting like this one existed first.

Save Point 11:59

Save Point 11:59 original artwork, a surreal video game-inspired painting with neon colors and glossy resin finish

A nostalgic, neon-lit nod to childhood gaming nights, finished with the same glossy resin coat as everything else in this world. It's a good example of how personal these get: half of my originals start from a memory I'm trying to hold onto, not just an image I want to paint.

All three of these are gone, but the collection keeps growing. Here's how to actually get one:

Join the newsletter to hear about new originals before anyone else. That's usually the only way to catch one before it sells.

Prefer not to leave it to chance? A Candy Decay Collector's Club membership guarantees something from this world lands in your mailbox regularly, and my guide to originals, prints and downloads can help you decide whether an original, a hand-signed print, wall art or a digital download fits your budget best.

Thank you for caring about where art comes from. It means everything to a one-person studio like mine.
